2024
AGM October
Our AGM was well attended and went fairly smoothly. Reports from the officers and the Captains kept members in the loop as to the club finances. Our FML Captain Margaret Seymour stepped down at this AGM after a 3 year tenure. The Chairman thanked her for all her efforts for the club. The new FML Captain will be Richard Moule with assistance from John Lee.
There was a short debate on the role of the C&D Captaincy, but Hugh Greenfield will remain for 2025 season assisted by new vice Captain Anna Jennings, who will take over in 2026. Other than that the committee remains the same as last year.
Those members present were invited to put their names down for the 2025 C&D external competitions. The Chairman will invite all other members to do the same but there is a cut off point so get your names down asap.
June 27th
We played in the Kenzie Cup tonight against Duxford and it was a very close fought game. At the start of the final end Barton were a few shots down, but on that final end two of our rinks managed to win 6 shots (a 4 and a 2) which gave us a win 77:72. Had we not got those shots then we would have lost the match. Well done Barton - onward and upward to the next round in the Cup.
25th May & 6th June
If anyone has any club woods in their possession, please return them to the shed immediately please. We were embarrassed when the coach came to teach on both above dates and all our small woods were missing, thus making it difficult for the new members to receive the correct sized woods. Club woods are there for borrowing certainly, for members in their first year of membership, but must be returned after each match to allow other members to have use of them also. After that initial year it is expected that members will purchase their own woods to play with.
14th May
It has been reported that the vast majority of the C&D team, following their win against Gt Chesterford, left site without assisting Hugh with the washing up. Ken & Steve were busy putting up the bird scaring devices, and subsequently volunteered to help him, but it would have been nice if someone had offered to help Hugh clear away. It meant Hugh and the others did not get off site till 9.15pm. Please would all members remain to assist, if needed, in the domestic duties after a home match. We do not have little fairies that magically get the green prepped or teas made or wash up - its a team effort guys and gals.
9th May we had our first etiquette theory lesson which was well attended. Anyone who would like a copy of the lesson please let Margaret Seymour know (margaretseymour79@gmail.com) and she will email you a copy.
2023
3rd September
We hosted the Kenzie Cup Final on the green between Foxton and Meldreth. A win for Foxton 65:55. A very entertaining game of bowls in hot sunshine. Our Chairman Ken Gifford did a grand job of keeping players and spectators hydrated!
Congratulations to Foxton who have won this 4 years on the trot now - will they make it 5 in 2024?!
2nd September
We held finals day in glorious sunshine. Results as follows:
Open champion - Margaret Seymour
Runner up - Ken Gifford
Men's champion - Ken Jones
Runner up.- Steve Fordham
Ladies champion - Margaret Seymour
Runner up - Anna Jennings
Novice champion - John Lee
Runner up - Alex Wilson
Pairs Champions - Bill Hollins& John Lee
Runners up - David Hodge & Steve Fordham
Lord of Barton 2023 - Steve Fordham
Lady of Barton 2023 - Margaret Seymour
10th August - We held the Lord and Lady of Barton competitions this evening. Last year both cups were won by Margaret Seymour and she defended both titles tonight. Steve Fordham pipped her by one point (39) winning the Lord of Barton for a third time, so congratulations to him. Margaret managed to retain her Lady of Barton title with her score of 38 ahead of runner up Jean Watson (29). So congratulations to Margaret & Steve as our Lord and Lady of Barton 2023/24.
27th July - A great evening in the pairs competition tonight. The two successful teams to play on Finals Day in September are David Hodge/Steve Fordham -v- Bill Hollins/John Lee. Well played to all and thanks to Ken Gifford for organising.
21st June. - Laureen and Anna got through to the next stage of C&D Secretary and Treasurer Cup tonight winning 15:10. Well done ladies.
16th June - a great game in FML against Meldreth that we won 43:29, so a great result.
15th June - Laureen and Margaret won ladies pairs against Coton today and are through to the quarter finals.
14th June. - Laureen won her ladies singles match against Jean from Coton. On to next round
6th June - what a cracking game over at Milton we had. It was to the final end and final bowl to decide but sadly Milton pipped us by just 2 points 69:67. However, a great performance against the team currently placed 2nd in Division 2 so we feel we gave them a good match and came away with 2 valuable points..
*****************************************
30th May - good performances by both novices John Lee and John Bebbington tonight in the BHL. with skippers Ken Jones and Margaret Seymour both rinks were won so the match overall was 39:20 with all 6 points to Barton. Keep it up lads!
****************************************
May 2023 - Our thoughts are with members Peter Smith and Philip Seymour, both of whom are struggling with health issues currently. Hurry up guys in your recoveries as we need you on the team again!
19th May saw our C&D team put in a great performance against Beach to win the match 65:57 and gaining 6 valuable points.
Well done to all who played but particular focus on our new member Richard Moult who played his first C&D rules game tonight. A good performance guided by Anna and Hugh.
16th May saw our FML team win another match convincingly over at Histon with a score of 50:31 and the full 5 points as we won each rink. Well played team.
12th May saw our FML team win against Coton in a very close fought match. Both teams scored 40 points overall so it came down to the winning rinks, of which Barton had 2 to Coton 1. Therefore we won 3:2 overall. Well done to our newest member Richard Moult who played his first game for us and performed very well indeed. Promotion comes fast to new members in our club!
*********************************
The club received a donation of a set of size 1H woods from Vanessa, daughter of Margaret Robinson who passed away at the start of Covid. She felt that Margaret's woods would have a good home in the club where her mum played and she is correct. Many thanks for this kind donation.
2022
November
4th November saw our presentation dinner where the trophies were handed to recipients this year by Kirsty (Meta & Hugh Greenfield's daughter).
The first trophy of the evening was the newly named Meta Greenfield Challenge Cup awarded to Margaret Seymour as Ladies Champion. It was perhaps apt that the first name on this award went to the late Meta's ladies pairs partner and friend. Runner up this year was Laureen Wesley (Margaret's new ladies pairs partner). Margaret swept the board this year by also winning the Lord of Barton Cup (beat all the men) as well as the Lady of Barton trophy.
Pairs trophy went to Margaret Smith and Ken Gifford with runner up Phil Seymour & Ken Jones (they only lost it by one shot! )
Mens champion went to Ken Jones with runner up David Jennings.
Open Champion also went to Ken Jones this year.
Novice Cup was won by Sheila Killen and runner up was Richard McLean. Sadly neither were present to receive their awards so Ken Gifford (Chairman) will deliver them in due course.
A 3 course meal was enjoyed by the members and there was a great raffle at the end. A great way to end our 2022 activities and we look forward to the 2023 season to come. (For photos see the gallery)
August
As we come to the end of another season in the FML the Captain would like to thank all who have played this season for the club. We have had lots of new faces this year in our novices and we have tried to give them a few games to gain experience. I think they have all learned that the position of the number one is very important as this is where the head is built for the number two and skip to build upon. If you are not up as number one then it is most likely that the end will be lost.
Every game is vitally important and although your rink may be losing, it is essential that you keep plugging away as this will influence the overall score and final outcome of the match. The more shots we score on each rink the better our shot difference is in the league which affects our placement there. So number ones be aware that you are integral to the team as much as the number two or the skipper. As often as you can, get up to the green and practice to improve your skills (everyone) while we still have time this season. Next season when we reopen for the 2023 season I would like to see all FML players up practicing on a Thursday evening or Tuesday morning.
Margaret Seymour - Captain FML
July
To date (11th July) the league situation is as follows:
C&D we lie in 7th position
FML we lie in 3rd position
BHL we lie in 1st position
******************************************
There is a new bench in memory of Meta Greenfield which has been donated by her family to the Club. It will have pride of place by the green.
*******************************************
The Club internal competitions are now underway. Check the draw sheets in the shed cabinet and if you are at the top it is up to you to arrange the match with your opponent. C&D rules this year, so string needs to be put out.

June 22nd
A very close fought match tonight against Gt Chesterford. Hugh's rink with Anna J and Margaret Seymour won with a convincing 25:4 on their rink. Sadly the other rinks were just not able to hold back the tide and we lost the match by just 3 shots!
**************************************
June 21st
A fantastic FML match this afternoon. Our David J won on his rink with Margaret Smith and Sandy Fernand by a remarkable 39:3. Won the game overall 66:38 gaining 4 valuable points. Well done team

In the C&D competitions our ladies pairs team of Margaret Seymour and Laureen Wesley played against the Chesterton team in round one of the competition on 12th June. Chesterton were pretty quickly up 10 shots but Barton buckled down and managed to win through 20:16 in the end. Next round sees them away against Haddenham.
The webmaster awaits reports from other competitors in these competitions so we can report on everyone's progress in the games.
******************************************
Note that our Green will be closed from Friday 27th May to Monday 30th May for essential groundworks to be undertaken. Apologies for the inconvenience.
*******************************************Our Chairman, Ken Gifford, is the 2022 President of C&D and as such 22nd May saw Barton playing the Presidents Day match at home against a selection of cream players from across the C&D League. It was a beautiful sunny day with refreshments running as we played. Barton managed to hold their own and won the match overall by 83:79 shots. However, as is traditional we declared a draw at the post match meal! Our grateful thanks go to Pat Gifford who prepared the sit down meal for all players (30) and her assistants. Also thanks to Kirsty (Hugh's daughter) who rallied selling the raffle tickets for us! A very successful first event for Ken as President that ran smoothly.

Lights, camera, action! We were filmed and interviewed by BBC Cambridgeshire about our recent recruitment drive. on 19th May 2022. Watch this space for dates of broadcast.

7th May 2022 was a very sad day for the Club. We lost Meta Greenfield after her short battle with Motor Neurone Disease. She was such a major part of our Clubs life over many decades and is going to be sorely missed by us all. All our thoughts are with Hugh, his children Kirsten and William and grandson Percy at this terribly sad time.

2021
In November we held our presentation dinner where the cups and shields were distributed to winners, previously listed on main page. Congratulations to all those bowlers and a huge thank you to Pat Gifford for helping Ken to organise another successful event.
Two cracking matches on last two days of June. One in C&D and one in FML. Both were good wins for Barton. With only two FML games in July I hope the members will keep practicing up at the green to keep up the standards we are getting to expect !
The match against Meldreth on 18th June was postponed following a pitch inspection by the two captains. Heavy rain with more forecast made the decision a formailty. Date for the rescheduled game is 6th July.
The teams continue to play in C&D and FML won and having sporadic successes. Great game this evening in the C&D against Coleridge (14th June) which was very close. We won by 12 shots and gained 5.5 points. The C&D team members were on the whole in good form. There is a standard to play to in this league and thereby hold a place in the team. Members not quite at that standard get to play in the FML league where they can gain experience.

We played the first game in Division 2 of C&D on 5th May. Although we lost the match, we did win on one rink and the shot difference was only -10 so we did not disgrace ourselves against a team that has been in Division 1. The green was playing well with ample Covid space between the rinks. Well done Barton team - a great effort on our first outing into Division 2.

Two good wins under our belt in FML in April. We got 9 points of 10 available. (See match results for details). Looking forward to the FML May matches now.
Margaret Seymour - FML Captain

We owe Meta Greenfield a huge debt of gratitude for her role as Captain of the FAL team these past years. However owing to personal reasons Meta has stepped down as Captain and her shoes are to be filled by Margaret Seymour in 2021. Margaret was the Club Secretary for the past 3 years and looks forward to this new role within the Club.
2020
AGM cancelled
The AGM for 2020 was cancelled due to Covid-19 restrictions on numbers allowed to gather. However an electronic vote was carried out and the new committee for 2021 is as follows:
Chairman: Ken Gifford
Secretary: Laureen Wesley
Treasurer: Anna Jennings
Greens team leader: Ken Jones
C&D Captain: Hugh Greenfield
FAL Captain: Meta Greenfield
Member without portfolio: John Page
Having served their 3 year terms as secretary and treasurer respectively, we say thank you and happy bowling to Margaret Seymour and Meta Greenfield

February 2020
Our Secretary Margaret Seymour is once again entering the swimming pool to raise money this year for Diabetes UK. Whereas last year she swam a mere 2500m, this year she is undertaking the breathtaking challenge of swimming 22 miles (the channel), in the pool over a 12 week period. Challenge starts on 22nd February and if you wish to sponsor her click on the link below:
https://swim22.diabetes.org.uk/pages/margaret-seymour
So far she has smashed her target to raise £250 and has £316 in the kitty!
July 2019
A fantastic result tonight (16th July) in the C&D against Fulbourn. We won on all rinks gaining the 7 points.
Well done team!
**************************
A good win over at Comberton today (3rd July) in the FAL. Won on all rinks so got the 5 points. Well done team.
************************
We unfortunately had to withdraw from the Gilbert Cup as we were unable to make up a team this time.

Our Secretary Margaret Seymour played in the C&D Ladies Singles Cecil Petitt Shield Quarter Final on 2nd July against the current champion. Very happy to report that it was a win for Margaret 23:18 after a long and close 28 end match. She looks forward to 14th August and the semi finals (opponent yet to be decided).
June 2019
Our club internal competitions are underway now and hopefully most of the first rounds have been played. There have been some cracking games, but I have to make comment on todays match between Laureen and Anna. Margaret Seymour was the marker on a glorious day weather wise. The match was always going to be close but on the 25th end it was all square at 19:19. Laureen came through with a four to clinch the match. A superb game which was of a final standard. Well done girls - you did your "coach" proud!
*************************************
A great season so far in our FAL league
matches. Today 28th June saw us beat Foxton for the second time this season with a convincing score line (see match results page). Keep it up team !!
****************************************
Lord of Barton Cup competition
27th June saw a good turnout for the Lord of Barton knockout competition. The person with the highest score wins. This year our Lord of Barton winner, with a score of 37 points, was Steve Fordham. Well played Steve, we will all remember to doff our caps to you on the green in the coming matches!
We also had a competition running alongside (and at the same time) for Lady of Barton. This was a very close run thing with only 2 points in it. Runner up with 34 points was Margaret Seymour but our 2019 Lady of Barton is Anna Jennings with a score of 36. Well done to you Anna.
***************************************
Our postponed match against Duxford has been scheduled for 11th July. This is an away match. We have therefore had to move our planned Pairs competition evening from that date to 8th August at 6pm - open to all members (social and bowling), just turn up on the night and pull a partner from the hat for the competition.
****************************************
16th June sees our Club represented at the Great Chesterford Gala, an annual event. This year the team is Ken Gifford, Steve Fordham, Margaret Seymour and Laureen Wesley. We wish them luck in the match - hope the weather is kind!
*******************************************
We had a great game of bowls in the friendly match against Needingworth on 15th June. There were only 4 shots in it (to their advantage) and the score ended as 57:61. However it was a game played in the best of spirits and the weather held for us (only a slight sprinkling half way through), with the sun shining at the end. We all enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea post match with savouries, cakes and scones provided by the Chair, Secretary and Treasurer. We look forward to a return match next season over at Needingworth where we can hopefully claw back a win!
***************************************
It was with great sadness at the end of May that we received the resignation of our C&D Captain due to personal reasons. However we have picked up the pieces and the Committee have asked our current President Hugh Greenfield to stand in as C&D Captain. Hugh will retain the position until the end of the season when we will have an official election at the AGM, for this position as well as other Officers of the Club to be elected for the coming 2020 season. We seem to be on a role now and have had five straight wins in a row - well done to all the players.
May 2019
Our match against Duxford on 7th May was cancelled as they were not able to field a team. That match will be re-organised at a date to be agreed.
Our teams took the opportunity to play a match at home amongst themselves, to keep their hands in. A fun evening was had by all.
April 2019
What an absolute stonker of a quiz night we had on 27th April. It is our best one yet making a fantastic £851 profit. The village hall was packed to the gunnels and great fun was had by all. Many raffle prizes were donated and enjoyed by the winners! I am afraid that our own Barton Bowls Club team let the side down a bit and got the booby prize as lowest scorers, and the winning team was St Peters led by our own Ken Jones. Well done guys.
The profits will soon be eaten up, literally by the Green but without your support at events like this the Club would be struggling, so a huge thank you to everyone who had anything to do with the evening!
***************************************
A great first match win in the FAL on 24th April followed by a great win in C&D against City on 25th April. Keep it up teams !!
************************************
Congratulations to Meta & Hugh Greenfield (our Treasurer and President) on the occasion of their Golden Wedding anniversary on 19th April. 50 years is a huge milestone these days, and we wish them many more to come.
****************************************
We had two very successful working parties in the month to get the Green up to scratch for the coming season. Huge thanks to those members who came along to assist.
******************************************
We had a very successful jumble sale on 6th of this month raising in excess of £300 to club funds. Thanks to everyone who donated and / or helped on the day.
March 2019
It is with sadness that we report the death of Mrs Sheila Boocock (84) whose wit and bowling skill on the green will be sorely missed.
We also report the death of a past member and Treasurer of the Bowls Club - Mr Tom Goddard.
Our presentation dinner 2018
This event went very smoothly and the service was very good from Carol, our "new caterer". The evening was a great success and trophies were handed out to our winners and runners up. (See photo gallery for the memories).
The venue and caterer for this event has been changed this year. We have for the past 2 years been to the Stove but they have had a change of chef and menu which precludes evening meals now. Therefore we are venturing into new waters and trying out a new chef (Carol). We will be hiring the Comberton Village Hall for the event and details will follow shortly.
The event went off without a hitch and everyone who attended (record turnout) had a fantastic evening. Well done to all the recipients of cups and shields.

Interclub competitions 2018
These are well underway now and the lists of who is playing who are on the board at the Green. Please ensure that when you complete your match, you put the winners name in the appropriate box so the next match can occur. Many thanks.

The 2018 fixture list has now been updated so take a look at the relevant page on this site and let the skippers know your availability asap.

There will be a working party shortly to dig ditches etc for installation of the pipework for the sprinkler system. The electricity supply work taking power from the pavilion to the shed commences in a few days time. We are progressing slowly but surely and hopefully on track for the start of the season in April.

News from Down Under: We recently heard from Todd who left the club at the end of 2017 to return with his family to New Zealand. The good news is that Sierra Bridgman, has been selected to play for her Year 9 team at Onslow College back in New Zealand. We are delighted for Sierra and wish her continued success in her matches with the team. We also understand that she plans to commence indoor bowling in the winter down in New Zealand, so again good luck with that Sierra. Although we have lost a youth member we are so very happy that she continues to play the sport, albeit on the other side of the world! Hopefully we will have some photos shortly to follow her progress.
Update on Sierra
Very happy to report that Sierra won the gold medal in the Wellington Regional Championships earlier this year - very well done young lady, you will go far!

Historical for 2017
C&D match against Romsey 17th July
We had a good win against Romsey tonight in a game played in very good spirits. Barton won the match 69:57 (6:1) which should help us in the league table. Thank you to Romsey for your hospitality after the match.
Club Competitions 2017
The draw for the Ladies Singles, Mens Singles, Novice and Open Cups were made this afternoon (5th July). The lists will be posted on the club noticeboard tomorrow evening (6th July). Please arrange your matches by the dates on the list so that we can run smoothly to finals day on Saturday 2nd September. Good luck to you all !!
Green Upkeep - April 2017
There has been a lot of activity over the past months relating to the Green. Our thanks go to Steve Fordham and his helpers for all the efforts in replacing the boards on the tennis court side of the green. This was back breaking work but now looks great. We had a working party recently that prepared the ditches by weeding, painting boards and laying rubber protection for the season ahead.
Sadly the problem we had with moles has reared its ugly head again and the Committee have this in hand.
NEW ROLL UP SESSION
The Committee agreed at our recent meeting that we will commence an additional roll up session to allow members a better chance of getting a friendly game. Open to all members, social and visitors, this is a chance to get together in the morning from 10am till around midday and have a game of bowls with refreshments available. It is hoped that our new recruits will be able to attend this and perhaps we might even have a little in-house competition running. This session will have a small fee attached of £2 per person to help cover the costs of the pavilion hire. Please note that the normal Club night on Thursday will remain fre
The season is underway and FML team have slipped from 2nd to 7th place in the league after playing 7 of 20 games - its all on the massive shot difference we give away! BHL got underway in mid May and the C&D team are also sitting high in their table, as at 14.6.24 we are 3rd in the league.
Club competitions will be drawn up by Ken Gifford in due course. Let him know if you do not wish to play otherwise your names will go into the hat for selection.
Good luck to those members who have entered the Cambridge & District external competitions this year. Newer members might like to do this next year as experience gathering! Please report your results to Margaret so she can list them in the next column. Cannot publish results without the information!
The Club internal competitions were completed at Finals Day on 7th September and the results were as follows:
Novice Champion
Alex Wilson
- runner up: John Bebbington
Ladies Champion
Anna Jennings
- runner up: Laureen Wesley
Mens Champion
Ken Jones
- runner up: Steve Fordham
Open Champion
Anna Jennings
- runner up: John Watson
Pairs Champions
John Lee & Dick Kingshott
- runners up: Sandy Fernand & Ken Gifford

NEWS FOR 2023
Great finals day on 2nd September - see left for results.
We hosted the Kenzie Cup final on 3rd September between Foxton and Meldreth. A very close match and entertaining bowls to boot. Winner to be announced.
w/e 16th June A good week of bowls this week. Laureen won her C&D ladies singles challenge match and goes through to the next round. She and Margaret Seymour also won their C&D ladies pairs match and are now through to the quarter finals. Several matches are also being played this week and the FML team did well against Meldreth winning 43:29 on Friday.
Barton members are progressing well in the C&D competitions. Hugh Greenfield led his team to a great win against Girton in the Lacon Cup and are due to play the next round shortly. Anna and son David played their socks off against Milton in the mixed pairs and won 19:14, so they too are through to the next round. Laureen & Margaret are now through to the quarter finals in the ladies pairs competition. Ken J and his team in the Eltisley Cup are also through to the quarter finals.
OPEN EVENING 4th May
It was a disappointing evening as far as new recruits are concerned. We advertised mainly in and around Barton this year and this proved to be a mistake as not one person turned out for a trial run. This is a great shame as we are offering a reduced annual membership of just £10 this season, giving full membership rights.
However we did have a dozen members turn up to assist on the evening, so they made use of the time with the England Bowls Coach who had come along to support us. His input was much appreciated by all. The Coach will return on 1st June, so any members who would like to get some additional free coaching please let Margaret Seymour know. A rethink is required to attract new members to the club..
*******************************************
Our thoughts are with member Phil Seymour who was taken very ill in early December with a ruptured aortic artery and underwent lifesaving emergency surgery on 4th December. Sadly, under anaesthesia, he suffered multiple strokes and heart failure, only getting home in March post a stint in rehab and a couple of relapses.. He continues to make slow but steady progress and hopes to be back bowling at some point this season.
Also our thoughts are with member Peter Smith who recently had a nasty fall from his bike and was found to have pneumonia whilst in hospital! He too is now home making progress.
*******************************************
Our recruitment drive for 2022 was very successful and we now welcome the following new members:
Frank, Nichola, Shani, John L, Peter, Richard, Beatrice, Amani, James, John B, Carol, Henry, Jean & Martin.
WELCOME TO THE CLUB ONE AND ALL. Enjoy your sessions and if not already in the FML team, you soon will be!
************************************
BBC interview the BBC
The BBC came along on 19th May to interview the club members on the recent successful recruitment drive. Katherine the reporter made an audio which was broadcast on Radio Cambridgeshire on 25th May and her video is being submitted to BBC Look East where we hope it will be selected for broadcast in the not too distant future.
Copies of both interviews will be made available to the Club and can be obtained by members via our social media formats.
Club roll up sessions from April 2022
Don't forget we have the Tuesday morning 10 - 12 noon roll up session and Thursday night 6pm - 8.30pm club night. It would be nice to see members practicing on the green!
Open Day 23rd APRIL 2022
We held a busy open day and subsequent two evenings attracting 25 new potential members. Several have now joined the club whilst others are returning for another trial to be sure it is a sport for them.
**********************************************
2021
We had a successful Covid regulated open day in May 2021. As a result the Club have gained 4 new bowlers and 3 social members. We welcome Shelagh, Russ, Jean, John, Anne, Ian and Nizami to the Club and look forward to some great bowling together.
******************************************
We owe a debt of gratitude to the working party members who turned up to splash paint around and generally get the green ready for us all to play on this season. Thank you to all of you (you know who you are). We must remember that the Club is there for all players of course, but we must not keep relying on the same people to do the work behind the scenes. It would be nice to see some other members stepping up from time to time, if only to weed or tend the flower boxes due to be installed.
Due to the Covid-19 crisis in 2020 pretty much everything was cancelled, so not much to report for 2020. Now the government has allowed reopening of the bowls greens, subject to strict regulations, we look forward to a full season of bowls in C&D and FML. in 2021.
We took the opportunity in 2020 to undertake a much needed extension to the club equipment shed, which is now all sparkly and bright. Our thanks to John & David for undertaking the hard work involved in this venture.
The autumn/winter greens work was carried out by ProGreent, and our own greens team have been hard at work ensuring the green is fit for play in 2021.

First Social of 2020 took place on 15th Feb where we had our annual luncheon. A fabulous meal was served by the committee and was well attended by members. A raffle raised £80 toward new club equipment.
Historical 2019
COACHING SESSION 1st June
Our good friend and England Bowls Coach, Clinton Tweed, popped along for an afternoon of exercises to target and focus on our techniques. This session was for the more advanced bowlers in the club and limited to 8 places. It was fully attended and we all had great fun, whilst learning, and it certainly helped me with my heavy delivery (hopefully now subdued!). Clinton is returning to the Club on Thursday 20th June at 6pm to coach all members if they wish to take his advice.
OPEN DAY 4th May 2019
We had our open day which proved to be a wet and windy affair topped off by a hail storm! Unfortunately, despite all the publicity across the region and beyond the weather put people off and only 8 bodies came to have a try at bowls. However, I am happy to report that 5 of those have now joined the Club. Thanks to those members who turned out to assist throughout the day and to Wallis and Son (David) for their stand and the cars on display.

This season the Bowls Club is being supported by a local firm Wallis & Son Ltd of Barton. Elliot Wallis has already kindly donated a couple of dozen mugs to the club for use after home matches, and he gave us cake to keep us going at the recent working party.
Wallis & Son will also be making an appearance at our Open Day on 4th May when they have kindly donated three fantastic raffle prizes to be drawn at the end of the day. New bowlers taking to the green for the first time will each receive a free entry into the draw, so nothing to lose, get along to the open day and have a go. Refreshments will be on hand all through the day from 10am to 4pm.

Our first social event of 2019 took place on Saturday 9th March in the pavilion. The Chairman, Treasurer and Secretary cooked for the members and the event was well supported by 21 bodies. This is an opportunity for social members as well as players to get together before the season for a chin wag, as well as an opportunity to raise a few pounds for the Club. We had a lively raffle after the meal and I am pleased to report that we raised around £180 toward the expenses of getting the Green ready for the season.
Check out our League position by tuning into www.cambridge-and-districtbowls.co.uk. Click on Leagues (3). We ended 2018 in 4th position on the table. Well done Barton!
2018 looks set to be a good year for the Club. Our first project is to install the new irrigation system to the Green, which our Lead Steve Fordham has been working on the plans and control box panel throughout the last few months. Prepare for the working party call in the near future!

The Club recently applied for a Community Bank Account at Barclays Bank, which if accepted will make things far easier for our Treasurer. It will bring us into the 21st century! Your Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer attended a meeting at Barclays on 20th February 2018 and will keep you informed on progress.
Update on account
After a few hiccups along the way the new bank account is just about ready (July) for use.

Club internal competitions
The draw for these games was made mid June and games are underway Games must be played by the date on the sheet. Failure to do so will mean a bye to the next round for one of the nominated players.
First shock of the club competitions is that Ken Jones, who usually gets to the finals, has been knocked out of the mens singles competition by John Lee.

Division 4
The season has got off to a rather wet and wintry beginning!
Rain interrupted our friendly with City, but this did not damper spirits, we simply were very British and had a nice cup of tea whilst the shower passed! This first friendly match of the year is customary with City and we always look forward to it.
The Milton match was also a rather cold affair with the Green being rather damp, but again we had a fun game resulting in a nice win for Barton.
The match against Foxton was, yet again, again held on a cold blustery day, but that did not deter the team from a great win.
Our match against Comberton was a rather wet affair, and affected play for all of us. We just did not seem able to get a hang of the conditions unlike our opponents, and hence we lost the match. Still the game was played in a good spirit and we all enjoyed the welcome hot drink and sandwiches at the end of the match!
Well done to the team on their great win today against Melbourn 72:32 in the FAL
A very good game on a glorious evening with the sun shining on us! We won away against Duxford in the C&D, making up for our loss to them at home in the FAL earlier in the month. Well done Barton!
We fielded a triples team for the Foxton Gala on 28th May. Sadly we did not make the finals on this occasion, although our Chairman (who played for another team!) managed to reach the final. No cups on this occasion for us but another fun day was had in glorious sunshine.
Our match against Histon in the FAL was played away on an unforgiving green I think it is fair to say! We lost of all three rinks.
What a great game against Coton where we had a clear win of 88:34 giving us wins on all four rinks. The maximum 7 points awarded. This should keep us up in the top 2 of the league so far this season.
Well we gave away a bad loss to Comberton on 26th June in the C&D league, but rallied together and managed to retrieve an almost identical score in our favour in the Kenzie Cup two days later! Well done team, we look forward to playing Meldreth in the next round.
Cecil Petit Rosebowl 1st round: Valiant effort by Margaret against Rose Goodwin (Castle Camps Bowls Club) in the first round of this cup. We put up a valiant effort but were beaten 21:15 in the end. Good luck to Rose on the next stage.
CUP PROGRESS
I'm very happy to report that in the 2 wood triples-Lord Eltisley Cup Steve F, Ken J and Ken G played a very strong team from Division One C & D-Balsham and won 25-10. On the same night, in the Lacon Cup Hugh, Meta and John Chance lost a very close game by just three shots against a strong side from Gamlingay. The next morning, after a full English breakfast at the pavilion, Ken G and Ken J helped Steve F to play in the Lacon Cup Triples and beat a very strong team from Div. two-Mitchell Lodge 22-15. Again coming good over the last three ends.
Happy to report that our Steve Fordham won his Prelim match in the Over 60's Dick Moody Cup by 21:14. Good luck in the next round Steve.
A good effort from Hugh Greenfield in the Over 60's SIngles, Dick Moody Cup. Final score 21:16 in favour of Bruce Herriman. Commiserations Hugh but a well fought match!
CAPTAIN TAYLOR CUP
Meta and Margaret put up a strong challenge in this first round match of Secretary & Treasurer competition, against Trumpington. Sadly we lost our concentration on the last few ends and the match. Thanks to Trumpington Secretary & Treasurer for your hospitality post match.
I am however very happy to report that Steve F, Ken J and Ken G won their second Lord Eltisley Cup against a team from Milton 25:8. We now play a strong team from Sawston who we just managed to beat last year. Keep up the good work lads!
GILBERT CUP
We put up a grand effort against the strong Division 2 Trumpington team, giving what is arguably our best performance in this Cup. Only 7 shots difference. Next year ......
Great Chesterford Bowls Gala
On a gloriously hot and sunny day on 18th June we fielded a team to play in the above Gala, just over the border in Essex. Our team consisted of Ken Gifford, Steve Fordham, Philip Seymour and Margaret Seymour and we were apparently the only team not to lose a game. We won 4 and drew 2 games. However, we were pipped to the title by Melbourn BC who got 83 points to our 80. The difference was on ends won and shot difference. Nevertheless, we were delighted to come 2nd place, as last year we were unplaced. The team won a small prize each, but the fun of the game despite the long day from 9.45 am to 6.45pm made it worthwhile.
Margaret was lucky enough to win the spider at the start of the gala for which she was rewarded with a bottle of Bacardi rum! As was reported to Ken, 2nd place is good and next year we can win it ...!!! The whole day was very well run by Great Chesterford BC with plenty of ways to spend our money - refreshments, bar, raffles and cake stall.
Comberton Gala Day 25th June 2017
We fielded a team for this triples match of Steve F, Margaret S and Philip S. We played 4 matches, of which we won two and lost the others by just one point and two points respectively. Not enough to get us to the final this time, but a good show for Barton again.
Lord of Barton Cup 29th June 2017
Philip Seymour was the winner of the Lord of Barton Cup for 2017, followed closely by runner up Ken Jones
Recruitment Drive for Youth and Adult on 25th May 2017
We had a great success with our recruitment drive with age ranges from 7 to 70 turning out to support the Club. It was particularly pleasing to see family groups attending and playing and most importantly having fun in the process. See the photo section for an idea of the fun we had. We set up a target for the youngsters to bowl to, which they proved very accurate at too!
We had a young girl aged 12 and a lad aged 13 who show some true potential and we have encouraged them to return and bring some friends with them!
Ken G and John W did a great job with the BBQ and we all tucked into burgers and sausages in rolls. There was also squash for the kids and alcohol for the grown ups on tap. Despite this being a free BBQ, there was a generous donation to club funds of £35 - thanks to all who contributed.
What is most pleasing is that we gained a full member tonight to the club and a commitment from 5 further people to come along next week for the official England Bowls Coach session. Others are away for half term, but will return on the next session.
It is not too late to get in on the act though! Further sessions are on Thursday 1st June, 15th June and 22nd June - just contact us to learn more.
End of official recruitment drive
Yesterday (22nd June) saw the end of our 4 week recruitment / coaching drive. I am very happy to inform the members that we have received requests from 6 persons to join the club as players and one as a social member. Paperwork is in hand to get these persons registered asap and playing alongside us all.
The successful grant application cheque arrived earlier in the month and the Committee have been spending the money wisely on equipment for the purpose it was awarded.
Just because the official recruitment sessions are over, does not mean that others cannot still come along and are are very welcome to try their hand.
We have the club competitions to look forward to very soon so get practicing everyone !
