Barton Bowls Club

Barton Bowls Club

Our history

Barton Bowls Club was founded in the 1950's and has had many successes over the years in competitions.

We are a friendly club who welcome all new members to both play and to learn the skill of lawn bowls.  Many of us in the winter months take our game indoors at Chesterton Bowls Club in Cambridge where we play in leagues. This is a totally different game requiring different skills in reading the green and delivering your bowl - but much fun is had as always!

We meet at the Barton Recreation Ground Pavilion every Thursday evening at 6.15pm for practice and social gathering, as well as Tuesday mornings from 10am till midday.  Refreshments are on hand.  It is a great place to make new friends whilst enjoying a pleasant game of bowls.  The green is available for members to roll up and practice at any time, subject to matches of course, with access to the equipment.  Please note the green is cut Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings so avoid these times unless agreed with the grounds keepers.

Lawn bowls clubs across the country are having difficulty in encouraging younger players in the sport of bowls, but we at Barton believe that the younger generation has a lot to offer the sport.  We only have to look at the TV coverage of bowls to see that bowlers are getting ever younger!  2019 saw our collaboration with Comberton Village College and the chance to expose the 13-15 year old students to the game of bowls.  They may be harbouring a world champion in the midst!

We hold annual competitions in the club for best bowlers in mens singles, ladies singles and pairs as well as the coveted Lord and Lady of Barton trophies.  With the introduction this year of a youth branch we look forward to having a youth cup also!
